Our Story
After many years contemplating the possibility of adopting a child, finally in December 2008, my husband and I decided to adopt a little girl between the ages of 4-6 years old from China. We began the process of searching for an adoption agency.
Once we had decided on the adoption agency, we moved forward to find a way to cover the cost of the adoption process, which we had figured it would be between $20,000 to $30,000 upon completion of the the adoption. We had decided to use our savings and a bank loan.
Finally, when we had figured out our money issue, we moved forward with the adoption application. We had taken all the seminars, medical tests and training sessions required.
We were very excited because we had also completed our home study, and everything was moving along very smoothly, until the day of April 2, 2009, when I received the devastating news that I had lost my job after 10 years of service. I felt my world crumbling down, and my dream of having my new daughter in my arms drifting away in a blink of an eye!
I realized that I was no longer working for the company that I had seen myself retiring from and also had lost the benefit of the adoption reimbursement program that the company offers to employees.
On top of that, my husband had also received the bad news that his hours were cut from 40 hours to 32 hours a week, obligating him to find a part-time job in order to comply with our obligations and continue to live as normal as possible, despite the circumstances.
This major change affected me and my family greatly. We gave ourselves time to grieve and understand what was going on in our lives. We finally came to the realization that we had to call the adoption agency to place a hold on our adoption process, until I would get another job. Each day was a struggle for me, because I applied to numerous jobs with little to no success.
Despite all the negative, I decided to take a more positive approach to keep my mind busy, until the right job opportunity would come along, to keep me from thinking every moment of the day about my daughter , waiting for me to pick her up from the orphanage in China.
I began volunteering at "Give Kids The World", an organization that makes dreams come true to terminally ill children, granting their last wish. This opportunity was very fulfilling to me and helped me cope with myself and my family's situation. Because of this, and the faith I have in God, I felt stronger and more hopeful in life. It had given me more strength to believe that my dream of adopting my little girl and bringing her home soon would come true!!!
I'm hoping that soon I can continue our story and provide you with a positive outcome and take you along on our journey to adoption through our experience.
